CFA Leadercast Notes

May 10, 2011
By

Here are a few of my notes.  Some really good take away quotes (or my paraphrases).  In my next post I’ll share a few of my personal thoughts, but in the meantime, here’s an abbreviated version of what was said at the Chick-fil-A Leadercast.

Muhtar Kent (CEO of Coke):

  • When there is no agenda, sometimes the best ideas are generated.
  • Stay fresh in your thinking.
  • Be able to carry your own bags.
  • What keeps me up at night?  Arrogance.

Suzy Welch:

  • We are not the same person we were when we were 23.  We are not who we used to be or who we are yet to become.
  • Connect your decision making to your values.
  • Two deadly Gs of decision making: (stop reacting)
    • Gut
    • Guilt
    • Get on the road to who you are going to become.”
  • Ask yourself 3 questions:  (leads to living authentically – leads to joy)
    1. What would make you cry at your 70th Birthday?
    2. What do you want people to say about your when you aren’t in the room?
    3. What did you love about your upbringing and what did you hate?
  • 10 min./10 months/10 years – when making a decision.

Frans Johansson (Author of The Medici Effect)

  • Diversity drives innovation.
  • People who change the world try far more ideas.
    • Because we’re horrible at predicting what ideas will work
    • Do something small.  The first step leads to the next.

Sir Ken Robinson

  • You cannot train a dog to pole dance.  It’s a waste of a weekend.
  • Imagination is the source of every form of human innovation.

Mack Brown (Coach of Texas football)

  • If your mother, wife or girlfriend invites you to go on Jerry Springer… don’t go.
  • Don’t be the 40 year old who talks about what you did at age 19.  Do more stuff.
  • Keep moving forward.
  • Use success as a springboard to do the next thing.
  • Reinvent yourself every year.
  • Create and edge every day.
  • Quit griping about your work or quit.
  • Take responsibility.

Seth Godin (Author of Linchpin)

  • Artists use their platform and skill to do what is worth doing.  Artists start conversations worth having.
