If I’d had a Bucket List…

February 2, 2011

I don’t have a bucket list.  There are very few things that I am dying to do… or need to do prior to dying.  But there are moments like today where I say, “I have to do this because I will probably never have the opportunity again.”  I had never dreamed of doing this.  I had never really even thought about it before.  Yet the opportunity was there and with a little prodding from my daughter, I did it.

For the past two days, we have experienced a major ice storm here in Indiana.  It’s my understanding that we have somewhere near two inches of ice covering driveways and streets.  I went out to shovel my drive the other morning and couldn’t even dig up a single flake.  It was solid ice.  While the streets were plowed, my subdivision’s streets were merely polished.  I’m pretty sure they plowed our roads with a Zamboni.

So my daughter and I did the only logical thing.  We strapped on our ice skates.  While the ice was not a welcome winter event around here, we decided to make lemonade from the lemons.  As I said, I had never imagined that I would go ice skating around my neighborhood, but when the opportunity arose, I knew I couldn’t pass it up.  I can see it now.  I’ll be 80-something and telling the grandchildren about the winter when then ice was so thick we could skate on the streets. Doesn’t that sound like a story a grandparent would tell?

I never dreamed of pulling out my hockey skates for a leisurely skate through my neighborhood, but with the conditions being perfect, I couldn’t resist. Maybe I’ll make an Afterthought Bucket List, where I’ll list things I’ve done that ultimately deserve to be on a Bucket List if I actually had one. This would be right up my alley. Less pressure and less planning.
