Star Wars is an amazing brand. Over thirty years ago the first Star Wars movie came out (I was just a boy), and now my kids are asking for Star Wars action figures and other accessories for Christmas. I guess it’s common for brands to endure through several generations, but how many of those are merchandisable based on a movie? I really cannot think of any movie that has reached multiple generations in this manner?
The Star Trek series has lasted a long time, but my kids aren’t asking for Capt. Kirk. Same with GI Joe. What am I missing? Is there anything? Sure there are plenty of movies that have stood the test of time either as a stand alone or in a series of sequels. And, yes, there are a lot of toys that have survived through the generations. But what movie has translated into lots of toys and then just kept building on itself? Amazingly enough, Star Wars survived Episodes I & II, which were dreadful. I will admit though, I love The Clone Wars. Now that’s appointment TV.
(On a side note, apparently Lucas created the word “Droid,” and now Verizon Wireless is making some payment to Lucasfilm for their new Droid phone. Nice job, George!)
Here are a couple things my kids are asking for. Did you get the request for Star Wars toys too?
